Kinja'd!!!

I own a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid and I'm 18 years old. I live in Canada.

Insurance is pretty much unaffordable, it's over $500 a month if I was the primary driver, under my grandfather's insurance its $300 a month. Originally this car was a gift from my grandfather, but hes completely fine with me selling it because the insurance is a financial problem.

Typically when I tell people my Camry is alot to insure they don't believe me. But it's same as a Mazdaspeed 6 to insure. The Hybrid costs more to insure than the V6 Camry (almost $100 more dollars a month), for some reason (if someone could explain this, it would be nice).

Otherwise, it's a great car, sure it's a Camry, aka the jalop's satan, for whatever reason, but its reliable, gets you from A to B and saves a bit on gas. Being hybrid also makes it a good conversation piece.

I'm looking for a car that is cheaper to insure, not that bad on gas, and preferably Japanese. I know domestic vehicles get lower insurance rates, but the likeliness that I'll find an american car in the price range that I like or my family wouldn't call me stupid for buying is low (American cars have bad rep in my family). The only options I'm really interested in is steering wheel controls because I'm so used to it, but I can live without it. Oh and, I want automatic, for now. Manual when I'm out of college.

My Budget is whatever you think a 162,000 KM (which is about 100,000 miles) 2008 Hybrid Camry would cost. Every option expect sunroof, leather and heated seats. About $10000 - $11000 Canadian dollars according to research.

CB recomended this in my legacy gt thread. Not a bad deal at all for ya. I'm just too far away from Montréal

Well, since you drive a hybrid, I immediately thought of this.

Kinja'd!!!

If I recall correctly, they're pretty cheap these days, but very cool and very efficient.

Try a Saabaru (the 9-2x), maybe? Like an Impreza (thus good aftermarket support), but less costly to insure. I think there's one for sale near Oakville, last time I checked for under the price you're looking at. Not sure about insurance for you, but apparently it can get nearly 27 mpg on the highway if you drive it right, which isn't bad for an all-wheel drive hoon machine.

Other than that, cruise Autotrader for a bit.

insurance is high on hybrid for me, even the prius for some reason.

Also I get ragged onm enough for owning a hybrid, as if I chose the camry. People think i'm a hippie and think I think i'm saving the earth. Oh, and everyone wants me to taxi them because my car doesn't use gas in their minds.

We get 27-29 with mostly highway in our Impreza.

I was thinking about a Subaru Impreza wagon, wagons tend to get cheaper insurance vs their sedan counterparts.
Also it's AWD and one of my dream cars. It's a very good option, i've been looking, along side Legacy wagons.

I've seen this exact autotrader and got excited when looking for a legacy wagon, but I too live far from Montreal (Mississauga/Toronto).

Montreal has great used cars, I remember seeing a E39 Wagon for $5000 and it was under 100,000kms

I also saw a C30 for sale in Ottawa with under 70,000 kilometres on it going for $10k if that tickles your fancy.

EDIT: Link.

C30 looks nice and thats a good deal, but it's very tiny inside. I've been in one at the autoshow.

I don't want it much smaller than the camry because I move people alot, but some compacts I'll make an exception for.

It's not that bad! I mean

My uncle's corolla S is more thrilling, but the camry is so spacious and roomy inside, it's like driving in a bedroom. The ride isn't the worst but it isnt the best, it's average, i could do without the soft-serve ice cream like suspension that makes the car scrape every speedbump. But the sensation of it being MY car is enough to make me happy, and the audio system is freaking insane, it's like the previous owner stole the system out of a drug dealer's escalade, the bass is cray.

Volvo's are a maintenance nightmare . You have to remove the accelerator peddle just to change the cabin air filter. Swedish cars are weird, wonderful and expensive to maintain. Get a Honda Civic. They are cheap, good on gas, easy to maintain, relatively safe and drive quite well in any weather (Get decent winter tires tho). You can't go wrong with a civic.

An Impreza or Legacy? AWD is great especially in the areas that get lots of snow. Mileage is pretty good. They hold value pretty well though.

Yeah I was looking at the wagons of those since they are cheaper to insure than the sedan counterparts. It's one of the main things i'm looking for.

Don't understand why insurance would be so expensive on a hybrid. Doesn't make much sense to me. Did you try shopping around insurance?

As for what car to replace it with, why not a Civic or Corolla? Both are reliable and get decent gas mileage. Or if you want bigger, why not a non-hybrid Camry or Accord?

Kinja'd!!! Zohaibman72 > Stapleface-Now Hyphenated!

I agree, it's weird, but its something about it being harder to repair and the parts being more expensive.

I've shopped at many insurance companies and its always the case. I always put it against something I think would have much more insurance, i.e. Mazdaspeed 3 or Mazda 6 V6, both are cheaper. Mazdaspeed 6 is about the same.

Civic actually has the highest insurance rate in Canada. It's Canada's best selling car for like 16 years straight , and usually the more the car sells the more insurance is.

Corolla isn't that bad on insurance but I have zero interest in it, i'd rather get a 4 cyl or V6 Camry.

Accord I have been looking at alot, specifically the really well reviewed ones, like the '07. I want a V6 of that, but I don't know the insurance.

Ignoring the preferably Japanese bit and recommending an older Ford Fusion.

Kinja'd!!!

I have family members that own these and haven't ever had any issues with them. And I've found lots of them (at least local to me) for around or less than the worth of the Camry.

Gets around 30 MPG highway with the 4-cylinder, and as you said, being a domestic it's going to be cheaper to insure.

All the ones I've seen have steering wheel controls as well.

But, if you must stick with Japanese, an Accord.

This is the american car I'd get anyways, its the only thing that interests me in the price range.

I'd take one in black.

I am looking for Legacy wagons so I have looked at outbacks

Big bonus of the Outback: Cheapest insurance in Canada along with Ford Edge, I googled and they kinda compete for cheapest.

My 2015 Outback is about $30 cheaper a month on insurance than my 2014 Hyundai Elantra was. I guess it is because they are so safe.
